Folks, I have a pass to Coachella (long story) I'm psyched!

Now, How do I get there -- is anyone else going? I am debating flying in From Newark NJ Thursday Night 4/24 and leaving 4/27 but I can't figure out if I should fly in / out of PSP/ONT/LAX.. I don't want to rent a car, so thoughts on - ride shares - public transit - other - would be really appreciated!

I would like to book my airfare soon, so any pointers on which airport is best without a car, and the viability of creating shared transit would be greatly appreciated by 3/10

cocorosie (even with sound issues, they are brilliant, strange and beautiful)

seriously though, spank rock was so good, my head almost exploded.
for me, that was the best energy there. i danced my ass off.

Suspicions about ticket sales

You know, it just seems weird to me that they've already sold out all single day tickets this year, sold out in like two days. What's that all about.? In the past 4 years that I have been going, even when Radiohead and Madonna were on the bill, tickets were available for a long while.

I suspect they've drastically reduced single day tickets and are forcing people to buy 3-day passes. any other guesses out there?

I'm a little dissapointed with tribe at the moment. I know where all the past coachella attendees are, where are all the ones who went this past weekend???

I want to know what everybody's experience was like.

Me, it was my first time and I had a blast!! There were a couple acts I would have liked to see but couldn't either due to time conflicts or I was just plain too tired!

I personally enjoyed Massive Attack, Depeche Mode and Lady Sovereign.

What about you???

one thing i dislike about coachella, and there are plenty of things, is the giant frame it puts around Art (it's over here, and this is how we'll let you interact with it). Music and art are put in their designated spots, and your participation will probably not amount to more than taking a picture of it. It's one of those times when you can be in a huge crowd and feel really really alone.

Every year they ship in a bunch of installation art from the bay area. This year they had "flock" and "hypha" two sculptures by Michael Christian that you probably saw at burning man. Now, flock you may also know as the dali-esque sculpture that sat in front of sf city hall for a month.

But subject of this story is "hypha", the one that looks like an artichoke on a long stem. The point is that it was made so that you could climb up rungs on the inside of the stem and chill in the lighted cage at the top. but coachella's organizers didn't want anyone to climb it (for liability reasons i assume).

***i want to think that the conversation went something like this***

michael christian: here's this sculputure i made for people to climb
coachella: we can't let people climb it (for liabiltiy reasons)
mc: okay, then don't let people climb it
coachella: are you going to obstruct the entrance to the chamber somehow?
mc:
coachella: okay, well then, we'll just put a security guard at the base round the clock to make sure people don't go inside and climb your sculpture

Hilarity ensues.
First a girl in a miniskirt-cowboyhat getup sneaks behind the guard and scurries up the sculpture. The guard is forced to rise from his chair and shout at her to come-down-out-of-that-sculpture. Of course, he has no recourse but to stand and wait for her to come-down-out-of-that-sculpture. Once someone is inside, it is virtually impossible to physically remove them. She comes down eventually and flirts with the guard for a minute while he scolds her, then makes a run for it. The guard makes takes a few giggly steps in persuit and then giggingly returns to his post. He does not notice that a dude has taken that opportunity to stage his own climbing Coup d'état. When the guard does notice, he is furious. And when the climber capitulates, no amount of flirting seems to get him off the hook. He bolts, but his escape is less certain.

By the end of the night there are five badasses in the bubble with the best view of Tool ev-ar. It is a concert experience they will recount fondly to their kids and/or lapdogs. At the base of hypha is a handful of event security, one guard standing half inside the sculpture like a blood clot, and seven disinterested palm springs police who, again, have no recourse but to wait for the kids to come-down-out-of-that-sculpture. I'm going to call this a victory for our side. And though he probably won't say it in front of the event organizers, i bet michael christain would be deeply amused.

I REALLY want to go to coachella this year. but i have absolutely no one to camp with, and i want to camp, because it saves money, is way more fun, and is part of the festival experience! i live in san francisco, and absolutely no one that i know is going, so im pretty much all alone. anyone who is going with a group of friends around 19-25 years old, i'd love to camp with you so id have at least some people i know around me, and since i guess its better to have sort of a 'tent circle' than to just be alone...
im so excited about all the music there, i especially want to see Cat Power, Animal Collective, clap your hands say yeah, massive attack, ladytron, and so many others, and discover some new music i havent heard before!
i went to Roskilde Festival in Denmark last year, cause i went there for half a year, and it was so amazing, 10 days of amazing music from noon to midnight everyday, and I met Sonic Youth.
well, anyways i want to go to coachella, meet some new people, make new friends, and just enjoy this amazing 2 days!
so, contact me if you want one more person in your camp !

Hi! Hopefully my two friends won't bail out on me but for your information i have a 2 double bed suite with an xtra bed in the living room area in Palm Desert. I've got it for Friday to Monday. If anyone is interested in staying with me and splitting the cost please let me know! It's 179 per night. Also, if anyone is driving from the Bay Area please let me know as i am driving my car and would like to rideshare. I can fit 3 comfortably in my car. Please let me know if you are interested.

Bright Eyes

Did anyone see Bright Eyes on Sunday night? My friends and I thought Conor Oberst was seriously fucked up. He took forever between songs, left the stage once to change his belt ("I went to change my belt. It just wasn't working for me," he said as he returned) and mumbled other things that didn't make a whole lot of sense such as "If you have any change in your pocket, you should leave now." The music was really awful, too. We left when he sang "I want to be the house you were raised in, I want to be your shower in the morning." Now I know why critics panned Digital Ash in a Digital Urn. Utter crap.

Anyway, did anyone else get the impression that he was seriously fucked up?

So who do you think will do surprise appearances this year?
In the past there have been 1-2 pretty much every year.
Beck did one, the B52's Fred Schneider did one with Junior Senior.
I can't remember any more right now, who else was there?

I'm hoping for Q-Tip with The Chemical Bros, but I've heard that he
doesn't appear anywhere at all anymore. Any other guesses or tales
of guest appearances?

Counterfeit Tickets.

Ok, I asked my scalper friend about how to tell counterfeit tickets from real ones.

Take the front face of the ticket in question and give it a quick, firm scratch on the surface with a sharp edge of your fingernail. If you can see black underneath the scratch, it is real. If you cannot break the surface or see any change of color on the face after scratching it probably is a copy machine made ticket, and I would not suggest buying it.

I tried this with a real ticket when he was here, and it worked quite easily.

as a matter of fact, here are the camping rules:

ONSITE CAMPING RULES

All camping attendees MUST be 18 years of age or older & have a valid I.D.

Each camping attendee must have their OWN camping ticket for entrance into their camping area.

A camping ticket is NOT GOOD for ENTRANCE into the festival.

The camp area opens at 10am on Friday, April 29th and closes at 10am on Monday, May 2nd.

There will be on-site security at all times as well as first aid stations open 24/7.

All camping attendees are subject to search upon entry.

Feel free to bring your own food and beverages, but unfortunately there will be NO open fires, gas, charcoal, propane or any other cooking devices allowed.

No alcohol, glass containers, weapons, drug paraphernalia or drugs allowed.

No animals will be allowed in the campground.

Campers may go in & out of the camping area and wristbands will be checked each time upon re-entry (this does not mean in & out of concert venue).

Campers are expected to behave in a manner that is courteous to other campers. Noise curfew at 2:00am.

No tailgating allowed.

Venue is not responsible for any materials misplaced, lost or stolen. It is recommended you don't bring valuable items or if you do, please lock them in your car for safety.

DIRECTIONS
Directions to the camping area and parking will be posted soon.

ONSITE CAMPING FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do I get tickets?
Camping tickets are available through all Ticketmaster outlets OR at the CAMPSITE upon arrival (ONLY if tickets are still available – Cash/Visa/Mastercard Only). Each person camping must buy a ticket.

Where do I pick up my onsite CAMPING tickets if they are at WILL CALL?
WILL CALL onsite camping tickets MUST be picked up at the CAMPSITE. They will NOT be at the Festival ticket box-office. You should pick up your CAMPING tickets first if you have chosen the WILL CALL option. There is a special parking lot for onsite campers.

Can I bring food/beverages/chairs & a cooler into the campground?
Yes, excluding alcohol or glass bottles. Please remember that all packages, coolers and equipment will be fully searched by security personnel upon entrance.

Can I buy camping tickets and sleep in an RV or car parked in the onsite camping parking lot?
Sorry, there is no RV parking allowed in the onsite camping parking lot. No sleeping in your car is allowed either.

Will there be a lost and found?
Yes, Lost and found will be located at the onsite camping entrance.

Will there be bathrooms/showers?
Yes, there will bathrooms and showers available.

What hours can you use the showers?
The showers are open 6am - 8pm daily.

Where is campsite parking?
Campsite parking is free and adjacent to the campgrounds. NO Sleeping in your car will be allowed.

May I drive in/out of camping parking?
Yes, but no guarantee of re-entry.

Checking into the campground?
When you arrive at the campground, you should present your Ticketmaster ticket at the reservation desk. The staff will then give you your wristband which is required to be worn by all campers at all times.

How can we camp next to each other if we are not arriving together?
You guys are on your own for this. You can try and save the area around you for your friends who come later but they’ll have to find you.

What if I cannot find my campsite after the concert?
There will be camp counselors to help you if you get lost.

Will there be food booths at the campground?
Yes, there will be plenty of food and beverage concessions throughout the campground plus a General Store carrying various sundry items which may include: Cigarettes; Toothbrush; Toothpaste; Rolaids; Eye-drops; Lotion; Sunscreen; Chapstick; Mouthwash; Ear Plugs; Hand Sanitizer; Lighters; Girly products; Advil/Motrin/Tylenol/Bayer etc.; Band-Aids; Pepto-Bismol; Alka-Seltzer; etc.

What are the general store hours?
8:00am - 2:00am

Will there be electrical outlets?
Sorry No.

Can I bring my bicycle?
Yes.

Can I bring the family to camp?
Sorry, but all campground attendees must be 18 years of age or older.

Can I bring my friends into camp?

NO, but you can not sleep in your car in the parking lot either.

RUMORS! RUMORS! RUMORS!

Rumours are circulating that COLDPLAY, FRANZ FERDINAND, REM and DAVID BOWIE will play at next year’s COACHELLA FESTIVAL.

According to Australian website Undercover, next year’s event will take place on April 30-May 1, and also feature Nine Inch Nails, The Streets, PJ Harvey, Polyphonic Spree, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Doves and Tears For Fears, amongst others.

What have you guys heard? do tell!

Camping = parking?

Is there any place at Coachella -- on-site or off-site -- where I can "camp" by just parking, say, a pickup or SUV and using it as an overnight base of operations to sleep?

If so, how far is it a walk (or picking up and driving) to the main concert venue?

I'm flying in for the show and am NOT a camper so no tent-pitchin' for me. What worries me is that most of the pix on the Coachella pages show tents... otherwise I'm gonna need a hotel.

Cool Coachella Story

I just wanted to share my little story about Coachella that recently happened to me.

I recently went on a month long trip backpacking through Europe. My last destination was Munich, Germany. One night my friend and I were on our way to a beer hall so we got on the metro. There we just happened to meet a guy who was traveling alone and who was also American, from New Jersey.
We talked for a while and then he asked us, since we were from California, if we knew about the Coachella music festival. Not only did I tell him that I was there, but I also happened to be wearing my Coachella t-shirt that night! We found out that we both saw almost all of the same bands there and that we both had made our way to the VERY front of the crowd for Radiohead.

It is such a small world its incredible. So, there is my little Coachella story.

what's up with the Radiohead haters. Like evryone's crying cause Pixies didn't headline, so what! You were at the best show that yuo probably will attend this year with huge names. Don't get me wrong. Pixies threw on a powerful show, but Rdiohead fucking kicked ass. My problem is whta the fuck was Muse and Thursday doing on the Main Stage. They sound like shitty jock rock. And BRMC are highly overrated. Kraftwerk was pretty trippy. Broken Social Scene was buttery. AIR was Stonerific. Mogwai was brilliant. And Q and Not U was very energetic.
what a cool fucking weekend.

Where's the love for Kraftwerk???? They threw down one of the most amazing sets I have ever witnessed, all while barely moving. Absolutely stunning visual production. They even rolled out their robotic counterparts to play "The Robots." All who left after Radiohead sure missed out!!
